Making the most of built-in nooks

Just because a space is small doesn’t mean it should be deprived of personality. In fact, injecting loads of personality into a small space can be really fun and add instant charm. Whether it’s a built-in space under the window or a cozy reading nook, there are plenty of ways to optimize the space by combining style and function including using pillows, cushions, lighting, stylish accents and storage to create one fab cohesive design.

I personally love capitalizing on these tiny spaces by transforming them into a private hideaway for the kiddos, a tranquil oasis fit for relaxation or a quiet area to dive into a good book.

The space under the window

Working with small spaces definitely has its challenges, but it’s a challenge I am happy to accept! I LOVE capitalizing on every inch of a space, especially when a client has a built-in window nook and I can surprise them by creating the unexpected.

The photo below is of a small area at the top of a stairway that is flanked by attic storage space right through the royal blue doors. While at first glance this may seem like unusable or leftover space, I see the perfect tranquil escape. In order to give this space the attention it deserved, we added stunning drapery for privacy, a fabulous pendant light fixture made with stained glass, a fun rug and a comfy cushion. Throw in your favorite candle and vase of fresh blooms to complete the look and you’re all set with a relaxing hide-away!

It is also a good idea to incorporate extra storage. As you can see in the photo below, the drawers located under the window nook add practicality and style to this bedroom.

This one’s for the kids

When creating the perfect kid-friendly nook, it’s best to keep them on the simple side. After all, it will most likely be tousled with toys and crafts. The image below is a play room we designed for one of our client’s little girls. We made sure to add a comfortable cushion complementing the festive striped carpet, along with elegant drapery to add an element of freshness to the space.

A reading oasis

Built-in nooks serve as the perfect space for reading by providing the ultimate cozy atmosphere, and they can be tailored to both kids and adults. Two important elements to focus on when creating this hidden gem are lighting and bookshelves. As you can see in the photo below, built-in bookshelves are ideal for displaying favorite reads and layered lighting is a must when designing a space meant for reading. Add plush pillows, an over-sized cushion and even a trundle bed (the drawer beneath) for sleepovers!

After seeing how much fun it can be to optimize the use of built-in nooks, I hope it will inspire you to rethink your own. I don’t get to work with them very often, but when I do, I love making the most of these tiny spaces! Creating an intimate design personalized to each client is one of my favorite challenges because the end result is always worth it. For more design inspiration follow us on Pinterest and Instagram.
