Our construction & design process

For homeowners, the interior design experience is exciting, fun and challenging – usually in that order! The first obstacle is often that they have TONS of ideas having spent quality time with Pinterest and/or Houzz, perusing endless magazines, not to mention all of the fantastical HGTV episodes. The frustration begins when they aren’t sure how, or simply don’t have the time, to make it beyond the inspiration stage. So, this is where we come in! We often get asked what it’s like to work with the Laura U team, so I thought what better time to share just what it is we do here at the studio.

Get Inspired and Tell us All About it!

We start and inspiration and go all the way to the “Big Reveal” to create a beautifully custom home and an entirely enjoyable design process. The most important part of the design process is getting to know you, your family and how you live. We meet with you for a deep dive into your design plans and to find out what your goals and wishes are for your home. We want to know how you live now and how you see your lifestyle evolving in your new home.

For example, if you don’t entertain much now, but plan on hosting more events in your new space, that’s definitely something we want to consider as we develop your design. We will visit with you, perusing your inspiration images, and ask you lots of questions. We want to know what makes you blissfully happy in your environment. Then we turn this into reality through our construction and design presentations.

New Construction and Renovation

If you are braving a project requiring major renovation or – eek! – building from the ground up, we are here for you! At the outset of construction (or prior to), we focus 100% on establishing the basis of our design: the architectural materials. As an architect friend of mine says, this is anything that wouldn’t fall out if you picked the house up and flipped it over. And… big deal…our process works hand in hand with your builder’s timeline to ensure the project is always moving forward.

In a nutshell, our design process during construction consists of 2 large scale presentation: the first is conceptual with options and, after your input and feedback, the second is developed and super close to being perfection. Once you sign off on your awesome design, we hand your builder a detailed finish schedule with corresponding drawings so everyone is easily on the same page.

Design Presentation

If you didn’t renovate or build, then we are ready to go! Skip to the third paragraph.

If you did decide to break your house down to the studs or create something from scratch, start here. Construction is underway and we are seeing great progress. It isn’t always possible, but we love to start this process 12 months prior to completion of your home. Our goal is to install your gorgeous new furnishings – IN FULL! – the day your builder is finished.

Similar to the construction process, when kicking off the furnishings phase, we start with the big picture wish lists. We dream in full color around here and then we get down to it! There will be an initial inspiration session, a conceptual design presentation, and a developed design presentation. When you love your interior “on paper” then we simply make it happen (I could write a book about the logistics of making a conceptual design a reality).

This particular project might look familiar! We’ve completed the furniture install and photographed this space earlier this summer. It’s so exciting to see the final design concept take shape in our client’s home.

Et Voila!

Clearly, there is a lot that goes into creating a beautiful interior and designing a home from top-to-bottom. This blog is just the tip of the iceberg in detailing the process – I would be writing for days! One thing is certain: selecting the right partners for your design and construction process is the first – and most important – step in the incredible journey to shape your environment. We want you to LOVE your home and, when you live in a gorgeous, complete space that reflects your personality, we know you will.

Let us know if you are ready to jump into your own design!
