The weather is warming up in Houston, the sun is officially shining and summer is just around the corner! It’s truly one of my favorite times of year – long, leisurely summer days and nights best spent with friends and family at BBQs, lounging poolside or around the dinner table dining al fresco (once the sun goes down of course!).
The Laura U team always gets an added thrill when we can get our hands on an outdoor living room, pool or rooftop deck to work with – these areas always create endless opportunity for creativity. We have been lucky enough to take backyards, courtyards, poolside cabanas and rooftops to new heights with the introduction of bright colors, comfortable (and durable) textures and timeless designs that extend the home beyond four walls.
Whether our clients are using their outdoor spaces to relax, work or play, we love making their design dreams a reality! Read on to see some of our favorite outdoor designs just in time for the approaching summer season.
Color is your friend
Incorporating bold colors into a design doesn’t have to only apply to interiors. You only get one chance to make an important first impression so don’t make guests wait until they walk through the door to let your personality shine! Try dressing up the exterior of your home with vibrant color patterns that can transition from one season to the next. To transform the exterior, consider choosing a few accent colors to adorn your shutters, garage or front door, and watch the whole spirit of your home change before your eyes.
Less is more
Often times the outdoor spaces we work with aren’t sprawling yards, but there are so many out-of-the-box ways to transform a smaller spot like a patio, garden or rooftop deck. Adding a stylish pergola creates shade and introduces another texture to the area. Additionally, finishing off the space by introducing a stylish indoor/outdoor rug in a bright color is a stunning way to elevate the overall mood of the space and create a leisurely atmosphere perfect for enjoying the sunset after a long day. I love placing eclectic light fixtures in unexpected places, which is another chic way to upgrade an open-air living room.
Show off your style
You know the eclectic accent vase or table in your entryway that always catches your guests’ eyes when they walk through the door? Incorporating similar accent pieces into your outdoor spaces will make the area feel more cohesive and stylish. In my opinion, there is no better way to show off your personal taste and spirit than by adding some accent pieces to highlight your style. Don’t be afraid to introduce a series of structured pots overflowing with beautiful greenery, a fun table with complementary chairs made for enjoying the company of friends and family, or a colorful umbrella to provide a shady spot where you can enjoy a cool glass of wine on a warm summer evening. Most importantly, incorporate pieces to make your backyard feel like a true extension of you.
Pull up a seat
Experimenting with patterns, textures and colors can absolutely go beyond your bedroom, living room and kitchen and spill over into your patio! Seating is key for creating a space you actually want to spend time in during the summer (especially in the Texas heat!) Consider quantity here if you know you’ll be hosting often or plan on entertaining a big group of family and friends. The Laura U team is wild about seating of all shapes and sizes to make outside spaces as comfortable and inviting as possible for your guests.
Take a dip
Who doesn’t love a good pool day in the heat of the summer? Designing and styling poolside spaces is so much fun for our team – especially when we are able to create the WOW factor often reserved for indoor rooms. We like to keep things simple when it comes to furniture: a place for your drink and a seat that can double as a place to leave your towel in between dips is ideal. Because pools are often constructed with stone or rock in a muted color, we love to amp up any nearby hues to create a space that immediately feels fun and inviting.
Designing outdoor spaces is a fun challenge, but it’s easy for these tasks to fall to the bottom of your home’s to do list. This summer, make your outdoor space a priority and embrace this brand new “room” perfect for celebrating summertime with your loved ones.
