The design process starts by determining the big picture – the overall feel of the space, the theme of the room’s story. Then you start selecting the larger items like drapery, lighting fixtures, and furniture before finalizing the smaller pieces like decorative pillows and artwork. All those things together create the ambiance, but it’s the details that really bring the room to life.
When it comes to curating a space, everything from the furniture to the rugs to the accessories on your table is carefully selected and incorporated into the design. Accessories tend to get overlooked or treated as an afterthought in the design, but for me, they’re one of the most important elements in the space. Each piece has a place, a purpose and tells part of the room’s story.
Whether you’re using it as flooring, a backsplash or as a wall covering, tile is one the most versatile materials you can use in your home. It comes in all different shapes, sizes, and colors and allows you to create stunning floor designs that mimic a rug or embellish a wall with tiles that look like a piece of art. No matter what visual story you’re telling, there’s a tile you can use.
Vincent Van Gogh once said that “one can speak poetry just by arranging colors well” and I couldn’t agree more! The soft hues of blush and lilac speak to a feminine, airy space. Grays, creams and brown hues are very earthy and warm, while blues are calming and soothing.
The powder room is one of the spaces in your home that are meant to be small. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be beautiful and functional. This space is for your guests. It should be inviting and maybe even stir up some conversations. And, because it’s a small space, you can be more daring without having the huge commitment of large room.
Don’t be afraid to show off your personality with fun colors, prints, and wall coverings. Do something daring. You can use the same color palette as the main area of your home or use a different one. You can go as simple or as bold as you want to with your powder room. It’s a space that you can use to really get creative.
Like many of our clients, I have little kiddos running around and understand the need for a balance between luxury and functionality when it comes to selecting flooring. But with so many choices, how do you know which one to use? It may seem like you have to choose between aesthetics and functionality, but the great news is that you don’t! Today, I’m breaking down how to select functional and beautiful flooring for any space.
When you’re designing a brand new space or looking to redo your current home, one of the first things you might feel like you have to do is select a color palette. You start browsing magazines, social media, Houzz and Pinterest to find the perfect colors to use. If you can’t find just the right colors, don’t worry. Color palettes develop over throughout the design process. Yes, it’s a commitment that takes some ongoing research and inspiration but you’ll find the perfect palette with a little patience!
It is no secret that I am a big fan of drapery! Functionality and luxury are two words that come to mind when I think about window coverings of any kind. Though the main purposes of drapery are to provide privacy from your home and to protect your furnishings from the sun, they are also a way to enhance the overall space both visually and acoustically. Use your drapery to bring in a fun print or trim, enhance your interior with a vibrant color or provide a simple, or create a soft, neutral backdrop for your interior.
When it comes to designing spaces for your children, it’s important to think long-term about how the space will be used. It should be functional and reflect their personality. Because children grow up so quickly, their needs for storage, a space to play, and a place to hang out with friends and study changes fairly quickly. Thinking about these things initially will prevent you from having to redesign the space every few years. So how can you design a chic and functional space they’ll love?
I love incorporating vivid colors and prints into my designs. It can range from geometric, animal prints, organic shapes or the good ole’ stripes and polka dots – there’s always a place for patterned fabrics in your interiors. Prints and patterns are a great way to add depth, interest and personal touches to your home! So whether you like to layer patterns with solid colors or other prints, they allow for you to make as bold or as subtle of a statement as you like.
