It never fails. From going to market, reading one of my favorite design blogs, or browsing on social media, I’m constantly introduced to amazing products and artists! Besides using newfound faves to create Classically Current interiors, our team loves to share pieces we’ve been obsessing over in our journal. Last November, our Obsessions blog post featured Attalie Dexter Home + Accessories. Shenay, one of our lead designers, stumbled upon this beautiful, authentic wall covering idea! Since then, we’ve set out to learn more about Attalie and her creative design process.
“So, what’s your story?”
Don’t you hate this question?
I wish I could be one of those people with the perfect elevator pitch for who they are, but my answer is all over the place. It really depends on who’s asking. Sometimes, I talk about being a designer, being a mom, being in love with my next vacation, anything! It’s never just one thing.
Many of our clients have children (sometimes lots of children), which is fabulous because I love designing stylish kids bedrooms! I’m even thinking about redesigning my girls’ room this year. One of the common misconceptions many folks have is that they have to leave their kids rooms out when designing a luxury residence. This isn’t the case at all! It’s definitely possible to design a chic, stylish room your kiddos will love that coordinates with the overall design of your home.
Last month, we resolved to do something big: organize the Laura U studio library. The library is a very important part of our office and probably one of the most-used spots in the entire studio. It houses all of our design samples, from silk wall coverings to hard woods. It’s a place of inspiration, but also a place that has gotten so cluttered, we’ve been reduced to large catch-all baskets and full shopping bags.
At Laura U, our approach to design focuses on what’s important to our clients. Before we start any design work, we take time to learn about what they love, where they travel, and how they spend their time. My team and I LOVE this part of the process! Learning about our clients allows us to design a space that showcases their timeless collectibles and tells their story throughout their home.
Tile is one of the most versatile materials you can use in your home. You can use it as flooring, as a backsplash or even as a wallcovering. Because it comes in different shapes, sizes and colors, you have the flexibility to develop your own unique tile designs for the home. You can create a stunning floor pattern to mimic a rug or use tiles on the wall to create a piece of art.
Twice a year, I visit High Point Market in North Carolina to discover the latest and greatest of the interior design world. Visiting my favorite showrooms and gaining insight into where the industry is headed are very important (and fun!) parts of my job. New product introductions are a special joy. It’s almost overwhelming how inspiring just one showroom can be! And it helps me find the pulse of next year’s trends. Now that it’s December, I’m taking a look back at October’s High Point Market style. And possibly creating a 2019 wish list for myself…
