Interior design is about so much more than just beautiful furnishings. I believe the objects we bring into our home tell our individual story. That the furnishings, photographs on the wall, and collections on the shelf create a backdrop to the memories we make. For me, interior design is about creating a carefully curated, collected space that showcases your most loved pieces. The beauty of a collected interior comes from using pieces from different time periods and design styles – everything from mid-century mod to clean-lined contemporary, antiques, Moroccan, and chinoiserie – to tell your story.
It’s no secret that Texas brings the heat during summer time. Embracing the indoors is often necessary during southern summer months, which is all the more reason to introduce some new inspiration into your home.
At Laura U, we can’t get enough of the new designs that help breathe a refreshing new sense of life into our clients’ homes and that we know will continue to stun season after season. Experimenting with fun new colors, textures, prints and shapes is what gets us out of bed in the morning, and we can’t wait to share the designs our talented team is obsessed with this month!

It’s too easy to slip into a summertime slump and your home décor may be reflecting – or even affecting – your mood. It’s just SO hot outside, you’re likely dreaming of an adventurous getaway to some place far away and fabulous, and all you want to do is lounge by the pool. Trust me, no judgement here! Although summer is a time of leisure and relaxation, there is no excuse to fall behind in your #designgoals.
Consider this your mid-summer pep talk! Adding brand new injections of color to an interior is one of my favorite ways to breathe new life into a home. Just like that cool pool you are daydreaming about right about now, blue is my color of choice this summer.
Whether sky, cobalt, marine, navy, royal or any other shade that catches your eye, blue tones are chic, elegant, modern and cozy all at the same time. When it comes to working with blue, the possibilities are endless, and the team here at Laura U loves to work with this beautiful and versatile shade.

Have you been staring at the same blank spot on your wall for months now unsure of what to do with the space? Selecting the perfect piece of art to complement your home’s interior can be a daunting task since there are essentially unlimited styles, artists and genres to choose from.
As an interior designer, I work with clients all the time to find the perfect pieces for their interiors and one of my favorite local art galleries to source stunning and unique works of art is Laura Rathe Fine Art. Not only does Laura have a fabulous name, but I can always count on her galleries (two in Houston and one in Dallas) to have an amazing selection of contemporary art on display, as well as an impressive range of exhibitions and programming available in both cities.
When it comes to contemporary art, Laura is the go-to source and I recently chatted with her about steps homeowners should take to select the right pieces for their interiors, common challenges and solutions for choosing the right pieces, and even learned a bit about her personal art collection!
Read on for a recap of our conversation and tips to keep in mind as you continue your journey to find the perfect pieces of art for your home.
Designer vs decorator…is there really a difference? These two terms are often used interchangeably within the design industry and by homeowners alike; however, there are many differences (and similarities) between these two separate occupations.
Let’s break it down and see what sets the two apart and where they share common ground!
Summertime is the perfect moment to celebrate your personal style. Whether you have an eye for all things rustic, gravitate towards more of a romantic interior, or like a modern look when it comes to your home’s aesthetic, there’s no better time than now to experiment with doses of deep color, eclectic textures and unique accent pieces that will last you from season to season.
The team at Laura U is constantly drawing inspiration from unexpected people and places. Their vision then translates into the stunning work they do, which constantly amazes me! I’m so thankful to work alongside such a brilliant group who always keeps things interesting.

For me, a successful interior is one that brings the vision my client has in his or her mind – and then some – to life. It’s important that every client the team at Laura U works with feels as though they are truly home when they step through their door. We strive to capture their personality and their spirit with our work.
We especially love the challenge of working with families and couples with differing tastes and styles. This dichotomy between masculine and feminine presents itself often when designing a master bedroom to fit two competing styles. In these instances, it’s our job to ensure her style is balanced with his. Then everyone is happy and feels at home living in the design.

As interior designers, it should come as no surprise that the Laura U team spends a good amount of time fawning over stunning products and pieces from the best vendors in the business. We are forever dreaming up ways to incorporate the most inspiring pieces into our clients’ designs. At the studio, we are privileged to host fab vendors from all over the world, sharing their new collections with us and getting our creative wheels turning. We recently met with Tai Ping – a Laura U go-to for fine and unique rugs – and talk about being inspired to create something amazing!
A collaboration was born at this latest presentation: Laura U + Tai Ping. The awesome team at Tai Ping has encouraged us to create a custom rug collection using our creativity and their depth of knowledge in beautiful rug manufacturing. The Laura U designers could not be more excited and the team is on a design mission to share ideas for our own rug designs.

Here at Laura U, we are big proponents of creating looks that are timeless and also incorporate a style indicative of our clients’ unique tastes. This ideal embodies our Classically Current design philosophy. In this particular home, we were so proud to see it transform before our very eyes into a space that was light, bright, comfortable and welcoming.
Our challenge was to update each room by introducing colors and textures we knew these homeowners would love, while also preserving the calm, neutral palette of the original design. We were obsessed with finding a way to strike the balance between modern and cozy for our wonderful clients and we’re so proud to show you the before and after of this transformation!
Read on to see how we transformed this charming space with bright pops of color, wide open spaces and an inviting atmosphere that anyone would be lucky to call home!
