Behind-The-Scenes: Chopped and Screwed Chinoiserie

As we head into the depths of summer, the design team at Laura U sat down for a pow-wow over fresh-squeezed OJ, pencils and butter paper in-hand. After putting our heads together with help from the fabulous Tai Ping team, we now have a clear direction for the design of our five custom rugs. In concert with Tai Ping’s manufacturing know-how and our design skills, we are confident that our Chopped and Screwed Chinoiserie rug collection is going to be a hit.

Read on for a behind-the-scenes look at our creative process and sneak peek of our designs!

Chopped + Screwed Chinoiserie!

As interior designers, it should come as no surprise that the Laura U team spends a good amount of time fawning over stunning products and pieces from the best vendors in the business. We are forever dreaming up ways to incorporate the most inspiring pieces into our clients’ designs. At the studio, we are privileged to host fab vendors from all over the world, sharing their new collections with us and getting our creative wheels turning. We recently met with Tai Ping – a Laura U go-to for fine and unique rugs – and talk about being inspired to create something amazing!

A collaboration was born at this latest presentation: Laura U + Tai Ping. The awesome team at Tai Ping has encouraged us to create a custom rug collection using our creativity and their depth of knowledge in beautiful rug manufacturing. The Laura U designers could not be more excited and the team is on a design mission to share ideas for our own rug designs.

Read on to learn more about what’s in-store for the team as they dream up their special Tai Ping creations and “pull the rug out from under” their design comfort zones.

Fall Fashion Trends: A Chat with Elaine Turner!

Fall is here! My favorite season has finally arrived, and I could not be more excited. Every year, I eagerly await the changing of leaves, cool fronts, cozy interiors (my house is already decked out in gourd décor!) and new styles. While I love cute booties and comfy cashmere, I am certainly no expert in the fashion department, and I typically let my fall style come out in my interior designs, rather than my wardrobe.

Luckily, I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Houston’s own “handbag queen,” Elaine Turner, about fall fashion trends, and she was kind enough to give me the scoop on what’s hot this season. We had a fabulous time swapping knowledge over a glass (or two) of wine at Beckrew Wine House, and I learned so much about fall styles, Elaine’s (impressive) entrepreneurial journey and just how much we have in common (Elaine is also a mother of two and runs her company with her husband, Jim)! Sound familiar?

Needless to say, I am very excited to share all of the fashion-forward insight I learned during our happy hour. Read on for all of the details about Elaine’s amazing new fall collection, her take on white after Labor Day, and some inspirational advice from a lady who knows a thing or two about turning dreams into reality!

Indestructible Fabrics & Enduring Advice: A Chat with Crypton’s Randy Rubin

We are one day away from High Point Market and I could not be more excited or honored to participate in this year’s event as a member of the Style Spotter team! From the moment I was asked to participate in the Market as a Style Spotter, I immediately began making mental notes of all of the vendors and designers I knew I had to check out. One of the names at the top of the list: Crypton Fabric.

As part of my Classically Current design philosophy, it’s important that the interiors I design not only transcend the current trends of the moment, but also stand the test of time. My goal is always to create interiors that are equal parts luxurious and livable, because spills happen, accidents happen, life happens, but that shouldn’t ruin a design!

Needless to say, Crypton’s line of home fabrics checks all of the necessary boxes for  livable, luxurious interiors and the stain-repellent fabrics are available in a wide array of textures, patterns and, most importantly, vibrant colors! A long-time fan of Crypton, I was thrilled to find out the company would be a sponsor of this year’s High Point Market and recently had the opportunity to learn more about Crypton’s newest projects, what’s coming up next, the history of the company and a few pieces of advice from Crypton’s founder, Randy Rubin.

Of course, I am so excited to share all of that fabulous insight here and encourage everyone heading to High Point Market to check out the Crypton showroom to discover all that the company has in store!

Meet one of our Senior Designers | Meredith!

IMG_6850c

Hello everyone!

To introduce myself, my name is Meredith and I am one of the Senior Designer at Laura U!  Today I am thrilled to introduce you to one of my recent obsessions: Funky Chairs.  Make no mistake, ‘Funky Chairs’ are not to be confused with ‘chairs which resonate the music genre originated in the mid-late 1960s’.

I’m referring to exceptionally unique seats which add a layer of interest to your home. The chairs that go above & beyond their intended purpose: to cushion your fanny. These items stand  apart (or, in this case, sit) as a conversation piece in your home. I’m talking about the chair found in your foyer not intended exclusively for sitting. The piece your guests assume must have been collected during one of your exciting world travels.

Macaroon

A favored Montrose native representation can be found inside Macaroon by Patisse on West Gray. It was a brazen design decision to disdain traditional seating and opt for this ‘Fleur De Lis’ inspired statement piece. To our surprise, the furnishings proved as impressive as the sweets (which are exceptional!).

A few of my personal favorite vendors, those I can always rely on for unique designs, are Mr. BrownNoir, and Interlude.  Of course, for a convenient collection of noteworthy finds, you can always reference the latest Laura U Mag. What about you? How do you feel about decorating with unorthodox accent chairs? Are they too eccentric for you taste or right one cue? Let us know in the comments!

Until next time,

Meredith
