We’re officially at the halfway point of Texas Design Week here in Houston and wow, y’all — it’s ready been so wonderful! Texas Design Week happens twice a year – Houston in the spring and Dallas in the fall – and is jam-packed with incredible speakers, continuing education events, PaperCity design awards and more. This year is especially exciting for our team because we’re ending the week with the launch of the BLVD Show House, opening this Saturday!
January is all about getting a fresh start, finding new sources of inspiration and learning about all the new up and coming products in the design world. It also means that we get to take a trip to Dallas for the Dallas Total Gift and Accessories Market – so fun! This year was even more exciting because the entire design team joined!
Happy New Year and welcome 2018! Although we love the holidays, the anticipation of a brand new year starting has got us feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work. Let me say that 2017 was a fantastic year, but I have a feeling that 2018 will have just as many exciting projects and gorgeous photoshoots. But before we get started on all the new projects we have coming up, let’s take a quick look back at some of the major highlights of 2017.
The holiday season is such a special time of year! I hope your holiday is filled with delicious food and good cheer. If your family is like me, you have some fun – and maybe quirky – holiday traditions. Whether you enjoy the light shows, plays, festivals, decorating, baking, going to see the Nutcracker, gathering for a family dinner, taking a trip or selecting the perfect gift for everyone on your list, there’s so much to look forward to.
The holiday season is here and another fabulous year is coming to a close. There have been so many wonderful memories and exciting opportunities that this year has brought, but there’s one in particular that stands out in my mind: Working with Dec My Room. This unique and outstanding charity was founded by Susan Plank and her daughter Kendall in August 2007 (the same year as Laura U was founded!). The organization works with volunteers (like the team at Laura U!) to shop and decorate a child’s hospital room at Texas Children’s Hospital. They turn what may have been a sterile space into a more cozy, personalized home-away-from-home.
As much as I love browsing social media or magazines for design inspiration, it’s always much more exciting to see things in person…which is why I love going to Furniture Market. So when the opportunity came up to attend the brand new Hotel ZaZa hardhat tour for design bloggers, I knew we had to go!
Hey Guys! I’ve got some big and exciting news over at the Laura U studio. Our Team just attended the ASID Ruby Awards this past Sunday and ended the night with not one, but SIX awards!. I am so proud of this amazing team. Their hard work, mixed with uber-amounts of talent has produced gorgeous projects over the past years. And I am thrilled to see them recognized by their Interior Design industry peers within the American Society of Interior Designers this year.
When you want to learn about the latest in fashion, you watch runway shows or read your favorite fashion mag. When you want to learn about latest happenings in the design world, you go to High Point Market. It’s the largest furnishings trade show in the world and the best place to source the hottest products and learn about trends in interior design. I’m so excited to share what I did while I was there last week and give you a sneak peek at some of my favorite trends and pieces. So let’s jump in!
We have some exciting news from the Laura U Studio! The Houston Business Journal hosted their annual HBJ Best Places to Work Luncheon last week and we were one of the finalists. It was held at the fabulous Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston – aka the hotel with the Texas-shaped pool – built for the 2017 Super Bowl. At this full-blown Texas western themed event, the Laura U team broke the Top 20 Best Places to Work in Houston for Small Businesses!
It is such an honor and I am so proud of our team. We’ve all worked hard to build a creative, inspiring work environment over this past 10 years. And this ranking, falling on our 10th year anniversary, is the icing on the cake!
This luncheon hosted 104 companies ranging from Small, Medium and Large scale.”Best Places to Work” recognizes companies in the Houston area with the most satisfied employees, ranking them based on a survey created by Quantum Workplace. This detailed survey was sent out to the employees of each company to gather their feedback on five major categories:
- corporate culture
- worker retention
- attraction strategies
HBJ then compiled each of these scores and we were thrilled to be among those finalists!
Laura U came in at #20 of 53 small businesses in Houston, TX with a score of 95.694 out of 100! (It was a close call, coming down to decimal points between each company.)
Some of our top attributes are:
- Unlimited days off, it’s important to have a good balance of work and play.
- Creative work environment – we love our bright, modern and open office!
- Champagne Friday – Our weekly tradition where we toast the accomplishments of the week with a bubbly glass of Champagne (only the best for the Laura U Team). Here we check in with each other and review the events of the week. We show a slideshow of images from the week – site visits, progress photos of projects, event photos, etc. The whole office attends!
- Creative blocks – Sometimes the design teams need to block out some time to refresh and recharge. The design team gathers to share new products they’ve seen in the latest magazines, social media, etc. to help trigger some new inspiration and see what is trending in design.
- Community involvement and attending social events such as our exciting work with Dec My Room.
- Holiday parties – Valentine’s, Halloween, Christmas, Rodeo Day, Thanksgiving, and Holiday (the biggest party of them all).
- Puppy Fridays – our team is welcome to bring their pups to work, typically on a Friday..but they are really welcomed anytime. We love with our Laura U mascot, Cooper the Goldendoodle comes to visit.
- Employee of the month and employee of the quarter prizes were created to award hard work and help build workplace camaraderie. They are voted by fellow co-workers, who always have fun, kind things to say!
Top 20 is a great start and shows we are doing something right over here! Now that this bar has been set, we’ve got our eyes set to move up in the ranks at next year’s luncheon. But, most importantly, I love this team and becoming a “best place to work” would not be possible without them!
So, a big thank you to the fab Laura U team. And Happy 10th-anniversary…cheers to 10 more!
Viva La Recap? By now I’m hoping all of you are up to speed on all our exciting finds from our first day at Las Vegas Market.
We saw some great pieces on our 1st venture through Las Vegas Market and the 2nd day didn’t dissapoint! It was a whirlwind of great finds, tons of showrooms and zero downtime! I’d say day two of LVMKT was our busiest for sure. So let’s just dive on in!
