When you want to learn about the latest in fashion, you watch runway shows or read your favorite fashion mag. When you want to learn about latest happenings in the design world, you go to High Point Market. It’s the largest furnishings trade show in the world and the best place to source the hottest products and learn about trends in interior design. I’m so excited to share what I did while I was there last week and give you a sneak peek at some of my favorite trends and pieces. So let’s jump in!
We have some exciting news from the Laura U Studio! The Houston Business Journal hosted their annual HBJ Best Places to Work Luncheon last week and we were one of the finalists. It was held at the fabulous Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston – aka the hotel with the Texas-shaped pool – built for the 2017 Super Bowl. At this full-blown Texas western themed event, the Laura U team broke the Top 20 Best Places to Work in Houston for Small Businesses!
It is such an honor and I am so proud of our team. We’ve all worked hard to build a creative, inspiring work environment over this past 10 years. And this ranking, falling on our 10th year anniversary, is the icing on the cake!
This luncheon hosted 104 companies ranging from Small, Medium and Large scale.”Best Places to Work” recognizes companies in the Houston area with the most satisfied employees, ranking them based on a survey created by Quantum Workplace. This detailed survey was sent out to the employees of each company to gather their feedback on five major categories:
- corporate culture
- worker retention
- attraction strategies
HBJ then compiled each of these scores and we were thrilled to be among those finalists!
Laura U came in at #20 of 53 small businesses in Houston, TX with a score of 95.694 out of 100! (It was a close call, coming down to decimal points between each company.)
Some of our top attributes are:
- Unlimited days off, it’s important to have a good balance of work and play.
- Creative work environment – we love our bright, modern and open office!
- Champagne Friday – Our weekly tradition where we toast the accomplishments of the week with a bubbly glass of Champagne (only the best for the Laura U Team). Here we check in with each other and review the events of the week. We show a slideshow of images from the week – site visits, progress photos of projects, event photos, etc. The whole office attends!
- Creative blocks – Sometimes the design teams need to block out some time to refresh and recharge. The design team gathers to share new products they’ve seen in the latest magazines, social media, etc. to help trigger some new inspiration and see what is trending in design.
- Community involvement and attending social events such as our exciting work with Dec My Room.
- Holiday parties – Valentine’s, Halloween, Christmas, Rodeo Day, Thanksgiving, and Holiday (the biggest party of them all).
- Puppy Fridays – our team is welcome to bring their pups to work, typically on a Friday..but they are really welcomed anytime. We love with our Laura U mascot, Cooper the Goldendoodle comes to visit.
- Employee of the month and employee of the quarter prizes were created to award hard work and help build workplace camaraderie. They are voted by fellow co-workers, who always have fun, kind things to say!
Top 20 is a great start and shows we are doing something right over here! Now that this bar has been set, we’ve got our eyes set to move up in the ranks at next year’s luncheon. But, most importantly, I love this team and becoming a “best place to work” would not be possible without them!
So, a big thank you to the fab Laura U team. And Happy 10th-anniversary…cheers to 10 more!
Viva La Recap? By now I’m hoping all of you are up to speed on all our exciting finds from our first day at Las Vegas Market.
We saw some great pieces on our 1st venture through Las Vegas Market and the 2nd day didn’t dissapoint! It was a whirlwind of great finds, tons of showrooms and zero downtime! I’d say day two of LVMKT was our busiest for sure. So let’s just dive on in!
The Laura U Team kicked off the month of August in the lively city of Las Vegas! A couple of weeks ago we jetted off to Sin City and the Summer 2017 Las Vegas Market. Over the course of 2 days, we soaked up all the inspiration we could handle from our favorite design houses showcased at the World Market Center. We also hit up the fabulous hotels, bars, and restaurants for a healthy dose of design inspiration. Super excited to share all our biggest discoveries and noteworthy finds from the city that never sleeps!
If you missed my day one recap of the High Point Market Design Bloggers Tour earlier this week, stop what you’re doing and check it out before you read any further! There were far too many fabulous designs the first day for you to miss out.
Caught up? Great! Now, let’s move on to uncovering all of the inspirations from day two.
As I mentioned last week, I recently had the pleasure of joining a group of fabulous designers from across the country for the Design Bloggers Tour at the spring High Point Market. During an action-packed 48 hours, we toured the showrooms and viewed the newest introductions from the very best of the interior design world.
Read on for all of the details and my favorite finds from day one of the Tour!
What a whirlwind the last couple of weeks have been! I recently returned from an amazing vacation in Cartagena, Colombia celebrating the wedding of two fantastic people (I highly recommend a trip if you have never been!), and right before we headed out on our Colombian adventure, I was “on tour” in North Carolina.
No, I haven’t left the interior design world in pursuit of a musical career, but I was lucky enough to be a member of the Design Blogger’s Tour at the spring High Point Market. Presented by the fab team behind the Design Blogger’s Conference, the tour brought together a fantastic and diverse group of design bloggers for a two-day tour of some of High Point’s best showrooms and events with the best and brightest minds in design.

It’s almost that time of year! The 2017 High Point Market is just around the corner and I am so excited to join an amazing group of fellow designers as a member of the High Point Market Design Bloggers Tour. Together, we will give you an inside look at the showrooms, new collections, designs and all that the spring Market has in store.
As always, you can also check back here after the Market for complete recaps of my experience and favorite finds from the week-long event. In the meantime, check out my top picks and recap from my time as a 2016 High Point Market Style Spotter, and let me know what you are most excited to see or learn about this year!
It’s almost time for one of my favorite events of the year! The annual Fresh Arts gala is this Friday, February 24 and this year’s theme, The Cineball, is all about the movies. I’m always a fan of any excuse to dress up and plan to rock my best Cruella Deville look for the event.
While the costumes, glitz and glam will make for a fab evening no matter what, I am most excited for the event because of the cause it supports. Fresh Arts, as an organization, is dedicated to strengthening the sustainability and vibrancy of Houston’s arts community and works hard to ensure Houstonians have access to a thriving, innovative and diverse arts sector. Its work includes providing programming and services to assist local artists in their professional development and offer them access to resources needed to pursue a passion in the arts.
I’ve always believed access to the arts and encouraging young people to pursue careers in this field are vital parts of a thriving community and encourage anyone with an interest in Houston’s arts scene to get involved with this awesome organization (it helps that they throw really fun parties, too)!
If your calendar is open this weekend, tickets for The Cineball are still available, so you can join us to see for yourself what all the fuss is about!
See you there,
It’s already been a couple of weeks since the Las Vegas Market, yet I still can’t stop thinking about all the amazing designs! This action-packed weekend left me totally inspired after discovering an endless variety of fabulous new product introductions by some of my favorite partners and vendors.
This year, I had the privilege of visiting the market as a Tastemaker, where I was tasked with giving an inside look into the market, as well as tagging my favorite designs and products during the showroom tours. As soon as I began, I quickly realized narrowing down my favorites was not going to be easy because every designer, and manufacturer, brought their A-game.
However, my decision-making abilities prevailed and I was able to choose the pieces I couldn’t live without. Read on to discover all of my fab finds!
