4 Ways to Conquer your Design Blues

It’s too easy to slip into a summertime slump and your home décor may be reflecting – or even affecting – your mood. It’s just SO hot outside, you’re likely dreaming of an adventurous getaway to some place far away and fabulous, and all you want to do is lounge by the pool. Trust me, no judgement here! Although summer is a time of leisure and relaxation, there is no excuse to fall behind in your #designgoals.

Consider this your mid-summer pep talk! Adding brand new injections of color to an interior is one of my favorite ways to breathe new life into a home. Just like that cool pool you are daydreaming about right about now, blue is my color of choice this summer.

Whether sky, cobalt, marine, navy, royal or any other shade that catches your eye, blue tones are chic, elegant, modern and cozy all at the same time. When it comes to working with blue, the possibilities are endless, and the team here at Laura U loves to work with this beautiful and versatile shade.

Keep reading to see some of our favorite ways to conquer the design blues this summer and easily incorporate this stunning shade into your home.

Ready for Summer: Outdoor Designs

The weather is warming up in Houston, the sun is officially shining and summer is just around the corner! It’s truly one of my favorite times of year – long, leisurely summer days and nights best spent with friends and family at BBQs, lounging poolside or around the dinner table dining al fresco (once the sun goes down of course!).

The Laura U team always gets an added thrill when we can get our hands on an outdoor living room, pool or rooftop deck to work with – these areas always create endless opportunity for creativity. We have been lucky enough to take backyards, courtyards, poolside cabanas and rooftops to new heights with the introduction of bright colors, comfortable (and durable) textures and timeless designs that extend the home beyond four walls.

Whether our clients are using their outdoor spaces to relax, work or play, we love making their design dreams a reality! Read on to see some of our favorite outdoor designs just in time for the approaching summer season.

Kitchen Revamp with Vetrazzo

I have always subscribed to two design philosophies when creating interiors: “classically current,” meaning I look to the past for inspiration and combine those influences with contemporary designs, and “livable luxury,” which is the idea that interiors should be stunning and able to stand up to the wear and tear of everyday life. There’s no sense in having a picture-perfect interior if one spilled glass of wine or coffee could ruin the whole design! Life happens, and I always try to ensure my designs will stand up to these everyday twists and turns for my clients.

I often test out new products or designs in my own home before recommending them to clients because if a product can stand up to my lively and curious 5-year-olds, then I feel much more comfortable recommending them to my clients.

When it came time to design my line of performance surfaces with Vetrazzo, I knew from the beginning I would want to install at least one of the four colorways in my home. I had worked with Vetrazzo on projects in the past and was always thrilled with the finished product so I was extremely excited for my own Vetrazzo install day!

Before & After: Zen Oasis

Interior design is a transformative process. Through an artful combination of strategic planning and creative thought, designers thrive on creating a completely new space with each project – seeing a project through from beginning to end is, without a doubt, the best part about our job!

Of course, a full redesign is no small feat. There’s consulting and space planning, furniture selection and custom design work, textile choices and installations, and all of the small details in between that combine to create the finished product shown in all of the glossy photos proudly displayed here on the blog.

But what happens before the final photos? Let’s take a look at how our fabulous team took a blank slate and turned it into our client’s vision of a Moroccan oasis throughout the home.

Stay Classic, Be Current: 2017 Hues

Finding the perfect color combinations for my designs is one of my favorite aspects of the design process! I strongly believe design should be timeless and not solely based on the trends of the moment. In fact, this belief is the basis of my “classically current” design philosophy. However, the “current” part of this idea leaves room for modern updates that will stand the test of time.

Each year around this time, the design community begins discussing the new colors of the year, which I find truly inspiring!

Elle Decor Magazine recently shared its favorite 2017 hues and helped spark some new year color inspiration of my own! My personal favorites are shades of blue (navy, cerulean), earthy greens, rich amethyst purple, matching pastel shades (rose, taupe, gray) and a bold sophisticated accent color (yellow).

Here are my tips on how to incorporate these fab colors into interiors while achieving a look for the ages!
