What’s in a Renovation?

Every home has so much potential to be beautiful! As an interior designer, it is incredibly rewarding to see the transformation that occurs during a major renovation. When walking through a home that has been lovingly cared for over the decades but has never been updated, I dream of all that can be done to bring it up-to-date so it functions perfectly for a young family. While I love designing homes from the ground up, my heart lies in a gut renovation project.

Looking back on one of my favorite projects, I remember the importance of both looking at every detail and stepping back to see the big picture throughout the entire process. The design of this home was a collaborative endeavor between me and Letecia Haywood (our principal designer), Rudy Colby Architects, Windham Builders, Tellepsen Landscaping, and the lovely homeowners. This dream team created a gem of a home!

Follow along with me as I go through the transition of this gorgeous home from start to finish.

Interior Design for Your REAL Life

From stunning furniture collections to unique textiles, drapery, accessories and more, the world of interior design is filled with unlimited creative opportunity. Because we have so many options, we are often frozen and in decision-making limbo. All of the choices are, of course, a great problem to have! To break free and start moving your design forward into reality, it is of the utmost importance to honestly assess the real needs of your family, not just your aesthetic preference. This will help you to create some practical magic in your design!

For families with children and busy schedules (like mine), I strongly urge clients to consider the importance of the design of your most hectic spaces like the mud room and utility room. While your guests get to enjoy the formal living room and dining rooms on special occasions, you will love your kids’ backpack drop zone every day!

So, whether you’re getting organized well before the holidays or hastily stashing toys in the closet as your guests ring the bell, you will surely thank your lucky stars you went with a practical – yet insanely beautiful – interior design!

Keep reading to see how to create Classically Current styles that cater to the needs of any busy family.

Award-Winning Designs!

I know I’ve said it before, but I can’t reiterate enough how fortunate I am to work with such a talented team. Even better, I love it when others recognize their fabulous and creative interior design skills! This past weekend, the team and I attended the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Texas Gulf Coast award ceremony and came back with a whopping four awards, including “Best in Show!”

This was such a huge honor, and none of this could have happened without the dedication of my amazing team and the incredible vendors we were able to work with. Take a tour of the award-winning homes and their respective categories!

Costa Rica: My Seaside Escape

If you have spent any time on my blog, you already know I have a tendency to draw interior design inspiration from almost every place I visit. From the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the eclectic streets of New Orleans to the southern charm of Blackberry Farm and Central Park in New York City, even on vacation, I just can’t help but wear my design hat.

While this figurative hat is a permanent staple in my wardrobe, I do recognize the importance of “unplugging” from the hustle and bustle of a busy work life, and recently took full advantage of the opportunity to do just that on a trip to Costa Rica to celebrate my husband Michael’s 40th birthday!

For the big birthday bash, we, along with our closest friends, headed to the coastal paradise for a long weekend of relaxation, celebration and, of course, a little interior design inspiration.

Here’s a peek into my trip and the fabulous colors and textures I spotted along the way.

The Perfect Kitchen

Full disclosure: I am certainly not an expert chef… Honestly, cooking kind of freaks me out! That said, what I lack in culinary know-how, I make up for in my love for designing the perfect spaces for others to create delicious masterpieces! In my classically current designs, I love creating a space where laughter and memories happen. From bubbly brunches to Sunday dinners, weekend celebrations and even homework time, the kitchen easily becomes one of the most central places to gather in a home – making it one of the most important spaces.

Throughout a kitchen’s interior design process, functionality and livability need to coexist with fabulous style. Here are my top priorities when designing the kitchen of your dreams.

Introducing Beacon Hill’s Animale Collection!

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Beacon Hill fabric to create striking showroom designs featuring Beacon Hill’s stunning new spring Animale Fabric collection. I loved that Beacon Hill sought out a local Houston interior designer (me!) to help debut the new collection. I was honored to be included and thrilled at the challenge of designing vignettes to showcase this fashion-forward collection.

Using the new line of fabrics and Robert Allen furniture pieces, I gathered inspiration from various natural elements to design several vignettes that blended with my Classically Current style. Today, I’m excited to show you the finished products!
