5 Design Rules Worth Breaking

As an interior designer, you learn about “design rules” early on and they almost become second nature. Through the years the way you see the rules begins to change as your design style evolves. This is why I always say there is no real “rule book” when it comes to interior design, but rather standard industry best practices to get you started. Then you create your own rules- after all the point is to trust your own instinct and design eye! Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with following the rules, but I have found myself really enjoying projects allowing me to release my inner rule-breaker and push the envelope by creating a unique design with a classically current twists.

Everyone knows the number one design rule I love to break is the need to keep up with the latest trends, but there are a few more I have broken over the years. Continue reading to see five more design “rules” I believe are worth breaking.

Laura U Wins Big at the 2013 TGCC ASID Awards!

Last Saturday night was the annual ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Design Awards. We are always so excited to enter and basically hold our breath until the night of the awards. We absolutely adore our work, but the Houston market is full of other talented designers all of whom ‘bring it’ when entering their projects. Lucky for us we brought it too!

We won 2 of the Big Four categories and got Honorable Mention in another coveted category: Winner – Residential – Renovation under 3,500 Square Feet for our Southampton Moroccan project

Winner – Residential Over 3,500 Square Feet for our Memorial Park Modern project

Honorable Mention – Residential – Renovation under 3,500 Square Feet for our Bellaire Residence project (home to a certain starting Texan player! Look for more on this in the November issue of Houston Magazine or see inside the house tonight on Houston’s Local 2 at 10 pm)

See all of our projects on our Houzz page and at www.LauraU.com.

Old House Chronicles: I Can See the Light!!!

I can see the light at the end of the Super Old tunnel! Tile and cabinetry is almost complete, we passed our plumbing/drainage inspections (meaning we can fill in the horrid trenches plaguing the yard), we have our permanent electrical meter so the guys no longer have to work using a generator (don’t ask!), and paint starts next week! I love the tongue and groove ceiling that we installed in the master bath and the same is about to go into the kitchen. The accent tile for the girls’ bath is going in and I can see the outline of the design. All of the exterior doors and windows are IN! They look gorgeous and we decided to paint them all glossy black. I am going back and forth on how much wallpaper is too much wallpaper. Can there ever be too much? I may stick to the girls’ room and the powder for now and see how it goes. We are getting so close! I think we may actually be able to have Liv & Ryan’s first birthday party in Old House’s back yard!

Old House Chronicles: Black Roof Happiness

Got my black roof!!!

I have a new black roof! It looks great with the windows and I am so happy that we made that decision. The interior is sheetrocked throughout and is now being floated. Next steps: stucco, flooring, paint, millwork, electrical and plumbing trim, landscaping and … then move in. Easy, right?!
