Prepare Yourself Ahead Of The First Meeting

Preparing for the design consultation can be rewarding for both of us. Our guess is that you’ve already sorted through countless images and found a few that fit your aesthetic. If that’s true, then you’re on the right path. But if you’re unsure of what your design style is, don’t worry. We can help you figure that out.

One way to determine your aesthetic is to jot down thoughts about your current home. Then create a list of do’s and don’ts for your new home. Being aware of your likes and dislikes can help us prepare a design brief that’s in line with your style.

We also suggest finding some inspiration images. If you don’t know where to look, our Instagram profile or portfolio page are great starting spots. You can also browse the pages of a few interior design magazines, scroll through Instagram or search for inspo on Pinterest. In doing this, you may also come across something you didn’t know you liked.

Another way you can prepare for our meeting is by creating a set of interior design questions you’d like to ask us. We’ll gladly answer them plus any others that come up during the consultation.

The Laura U Design Consultation Agenda

The first step of our interior design process includes a questionnaire. This is where we will gain a better understanding of your lifestyle, design goals, aesthetic, inspiration, design needs, and favorite colors, patterns and textures.

Our goal is to make the design process as smooth and easy as it can possibly be, so understanding your needs from the beginning is highly important.

In the first meeting, we aim to cover the following:

1. Your Design Goals

What are you hoping to achieve by working with us? Are you purchasing a new home that needs a cosmetic renovation to build its character? Is your current home no longer functional for your lifestyle? Or maybe your furniture is outdated and doesn’t go with your home’s design. Whatever your goals may be, we’re here to help you achieve them.

By understanding you design goals we will be able to cater to your specific requirements. It puts us in a better place to eliminate the elements you dislike and include the ones you love.

2. Your Aesthetic

Understanding your aesthetic is one of the most important parts of the design process. We’ll work to define this while also discussing textures, palettes, furnishings, patterns, and more. We do not have a specific aesthetic or particular design style. Every home we design is client-specific and deeply personal. However, we aim to design homes that are endearing, thoughtful and practical.

3. Collaboration

As your design partners, we share your goals. To ensure that we’re always working with those in mind, we’ll establish a unique collaboration process. In doing so, we’ll be able to hone in on your style and deliver an interior that represents you.

4. Budget

After discussing your needs, desires, and scope of work, we’ll discuss your budget. At Laura U, we aim to provide high-quality services within your budget. And, our final cost will always include everything from fees and furnishings to taxes and shipping. If your budget is a fit, the next step is a site visit.

Virtual Interior Design Consultations

Since the coronavirus, most of our business operations have been remote, including consultations. However, this is something we are used to. With several clients living or working overseas, we’ve offered virtual design meetings long before COVID.

Virtual and in-person design consultations are fairly similar. Although some things differ between them, we’re good at providing you with the information you need. For example, you don’t get to touch or hold samples in a virtual meeting. However, we make sure you have enough information to know exactly how those samples feel without ever coming in contact with them.
